The end of nearly a month-long strike by the medicos will be welcomed by the poor patients. Both the government and the doctors must ensure that such strikes don’t take place again. For it’s the people, especially the poor who can’t afford treatment in private hospitals, who suffer most.

Today, every right-minded person is opposed to the UPA government’s policy on reservations. I would like to draw the attention of our policy makers to the recommendation of the National Integration Committee that was set up in 1961, whose members included Indira Gandhi. It said that admission to educational institutions should not be on the basis of caste, but on merit.
Office of corruption
The recent move to amend existing laws on the office of profit will not enhance the image of the Prime Minister. The President has wisely sent back the Office of Profit Bill, which was clearly framed to save some of the present holders of such offices.
It is heartening to read that the President has returned the Office of Profit Bill. He has understood the sinister designs of our politicians. He wants the criteria to be fair, reasonable and transparent. Besides, he has rightly questioned the motive of enacting the Bill with retrospective effect.
Save our schoolchildren
Reports of schoolchildren committing suicide for fear of getting poor marks are sad. To avoid the recurrence of such incidents, the system of education should be improved. Greater effort should be made by parents and teachers to dilute the pressure on schoolchildren.
