Fire breaks out at Kolkata new secretariat, no casualties reported

A fire broke out on the 7th floor of the New Secretariat Building on Strand Road in central Kolkata on Friday morning, but it was brought under control in less than an hour.

The building is the second seat of power of the West Bengal government and houses several government offices including offices of ministers such as public health engineering and power deaprtment.

In all 20 fire tenders and more than 100 fire fighters were pressed into action after the fire broke out around 10.30 am . In less than an hour the flames were doused.

Police and fire brigade sources claimed that the entire building could be evacuated on time and there were no reports of any injuries or casualties till 11:30 am. A search operation was being carried out till reports last came in.

Traffic snarls on the road however delayed the arrival of the sky-ladder which delayed the fire fighting by a few minutes.

The Strand Road is one of the arterial roads of the city that leads to Howrah Bridge and Howrah station.
