A major fire broke out in bhasm room (the room where 'bhasm' for the famous 'bhasm aarti' is prepared) of Mahakal temple on Tuesday evening creating panic amoing devotees.
As a result of the fire, darshan of Mahakal was stopped for more than an hour. Fire brigade officials struggled to douse the fire.
Assistant administrative offcer of Mahakal temple Dilip Gurur said nobody was injured in the incident and the temple was evacuated as a preventive measure. "The fire was controlled quickly with the help of two fire tenders," he said.
According to sources, the fire broke out at 5.22pm in the 'bhasm' room behind Omkareshwar temple. As soon as the smoke started billowing out of the room, devotees, who had assembled in large numbers on the temple premises, started panicking. The temple plunged into darkness.
A fire brigade was immediately pressed into service. Firemen took more than an hour to control the blaze.
According to temple sources, 'bhasm' is prepared in the room by burning cowdung cakes. On Tuesday evening, when the cowdung cakes were being burnt, the room caught fire.
