A fire broke out in the corridor of the ministry of external affairs on the sixth floor at Shastri Bhawan on Monday evening. The fire was doused before it reached the rooms, fire officials said.
A call reporting the fire was received at 6:20pm and within minutes six tenders reached the spot to douse the fire.
“It was a minor fire and was controlled within half an hour. The floor was completely evacuated and no one was injured,” said a senior fire official.
The fire officials indicated a snapped wiring could have caused the blaze. But they did not rule out the possibility of it being an attempt to sabotage crucial evidence related to the case of corporate espionage.
The building, in the heart of New Delhi, houses the offices of the ministries of petroleum, steel and coal. Shastri Bhawan has been in the news after police said classified documents from the building were leaked by government employees and sold to private companies.
