More than 300 shanties were gutted when a fire broke out in a slum in the wee hours of Wednesday in north Kolkata's Ultadanga area.
Fire brigade sources said at least 18 fire engines were pressed into service to put out the blaze that devoured an entire slum at Dhopar Math beside the Bidhannagar railway station in Ultadanga.
No casualty has been reported in the fire that broke out around 2:50 am. It took around four hours to extinguish the blaze.
The fire rendered over a thousand people homeless in the chilly winter night even as the agitated slum dwellers alleged that the damage could have been reduced if the fire brigade had arrived a little early.
"We have lost everything in the fire. We only ran for our life as the heat almost scalded us," said a sobbing woman.
Firemen said their work was constrained by lack of water source in the area.
