THE CITY’S first compressed natural gas (CNG) bus is all-geared up to ply on roads from Monday. The UP State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has also set up a Task Force to monitor the operations of all the city buses on Friday.
Meanwhile, the CNG bus arrived at the UPSRTC’s Gomti Nagar bus depot on Friday from where it will start functioning after its registration with the regional transport office (RTO).
The corporation has planned to replace its entire city-bus fleet of 100 buses with the CNG buses by end of this financial year. All the CNG buses will be manufactured by the corporation in its workshop, in Kanpur. “We expect to get 15-20 more CNG buses in the city by the month end,” said General Manager (Operations), RP Singh. He said that there was a plan to begin the trail run of the CNG bus from Alambagh-to Chinhat from Saturday, but the bus could not get the registration with the RTO delaying the whole strategy. “We will be in a position to ply the bus from Monday.”
The UPSRCT will replace all its 100 city buses with the CNG buses and all the replaced buses will be sent to Varanasi. As per the planning all public transport vehicles will be switched to the CNG in phases.
Meanwhile, in another development, the UPSRTC management today set up a Task Force that will keep a watch over the operation of city buses in the State Capital.
