First match held at Basketball Complex after reopening

AFTER THE Basketball Complex was thrown open for sports and cultural activities last week, an inaugural match was held this evening amidst cheers from about 100 young aspiring players who will now get an opportunity to practise everyday at the stadium on Race Course Road.

AFTER THE Basketball Complex was thrown open for sports and cultural activities last week, an inaugural match was held this evening amidst cheers from about 100 young aspiring players who will now get an opportunity to practise everyday at the stadium on Race Course Road.

MP Basketball Association office-bearers and members were present in full strength apart from basketball enthusiasts, sports lovers, complex receiver cum SDM Vivek Shrotriya and former basketball players including Kulvinder Singh Gill and Avinash Anand.  

In her brief but poignant speech at the match inaugural function, MP Basketball Association president Bhagyawanti Sharma said that the stadium re-opening would be worth if it produced national and international basketball players in future.
She thanked the administration for having opened the complex for players. Speaking on the occasion, Shrotriya assured support to the association in maintenance of the stadium and holding of sports activities.

He said that it was a major responsibility but district administration would make all possible efforts to make it a centre of sports excellence.

In his address, Anand informed that the Basketball Academy would be named after association founder J N Sharma, as efforts were underway to revive it. He said that its had been decided to award sport scholarship of Rs 2,500 to 30 selected basketball players.
