A woman will soon become the city’s first citizen. And the first time that the mayor will be a woman from the Other Backward Caste (OBC).

The criteria for the mayor’s post are decided by a lottery system. Lots for mayoral posts for 22 municipal corporations were drawn on Wednesday. In Mumbai, the post has been reserved for a woman from the OBC.

This is the fourth time the city will get a woman mayor. Sulochana Modi was the first woman to become the city’s mayor in 1957, followed by Congress’ Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar and Shiv Sena’s Vishakha Raut in 1994 and 1997 respectively.

A senior BJP leader said: “It is difficult to get good OBC women candidates. It will be difficult for any party to select mayor.” The reservation is a setback for well-known aspirants like Sena’s Ravindra Waikar, Sunil Prabhu and Shradha Jadhav, Congressmen Samir Desai and Rajhans Singh and Nationalist Congress Party’s Ravindra Pawar.
