Preparations are under way to launch the country’s first set of radio cabs in Indore.
Indore Divisional Traffic Committee will invite expression of interest from service providers within a month to run the satellite-driven radio cab services.
"We plan to introduce about 50 radio cabs in the City", Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and Divisional Commissioner Ashok Das told Hindustan Times.
The radio cabs will be cars to be installed with servers and people wanting to hire them could track them through mobile phones. But before that a digitalised map of Indore, where the City will be divided into different sectors, will be prepared to ensure satellite connectivity. To begin with, a call centre will be set up that will accept public bookings and keep track of the taxis through global positioning system.
Apart from Indore City Transport Services Limited (ICTSL) that launched City buses a year back, a few travel agencies have shown keen interest in becoming service providers. There could be more than one service provider in the City and they will act as an umbrella organisation for radio cabs.
Once the service providers are selected, they will provide cabs that are fitted with required equipment. RTA will grant permit to those cabs.
According to an estimate, the one time cost of equipment will be about Rs 19,000 per vehicle, which the cab owner will pay to service provider. The radio cabs will four to five types of air-conditioned cars ranging from Ceilo, Honda City, Opal Astra to Tata Indica, Versa, Maruti Omni.
The charges of these A, B or C class vehicles will vary depending upon the clientele. For instance, a high profile executive wanting to reach airport may hire a Ceilo but a housewife wanting to be dropped at a mall could opt for Tata Indica.
The decision, Das said, to introduce radio cabs emerged looking at lack of parking places in the City. “A car owner who is faced with parking problem may also opt for radio cab, as it will continuously move around in the area. It will drop the person at destination and move away,” he added.
