FIVE ARMED miscreants were arrested by a joint team of Pandrinath, Sarafa and Chhatripura police last night when they had gathered near the Sind-Karachi Hotel in the Nandlalpur area with the intention of looting a sales man of a country liquor shop. Two of the accused, however, managed to escape.
During interrogation, the accused confessed they had been involved in more than 25 cases of loot and other criminal acts all over the City. Police recovered two revolvers, one knife, and two lathis from them. Five stolen two-wheelers, two gold chain and one mangal sutra totalling around Rs 2.5 lakhs was also recovered from them.
Those arrested are Roshan son of Suresh Maratha, resident of Veena Nagar, Shyam son of Prahlad, resident of Yashoda Nagar, Ankit son of Ramji resident of Gauri Nagar, Ravi son of Mahesh resident of Gauri Nagar, Dinesh son of Ratan resident of village Pedni.
They had been operating in the City for the past few months and were responsible for a number of loots in Rajendra Nagar, Aerodrome, Bengali Chouraha area. They have confessed snatching around a dozen chains from various localities of the City.
Police said before they were caught, the accused were planning to 'graduate' into bigger things. They had identified a trader who carried at least Rs 2 to 3 lakhs with him everytime, and they had been following him for the past week or so looking for an opportune moment to strike.
Police said though they operated on a beat system, with different gang members manning select areas of the City they often used to quarrel amongst themselves if they entered each other's area. Often, just to confuse the police, different gang members used to strike at different places at more or less the same time.
