Five foreign citizens taken into custody

Gurgaon Commissioner of Police Mohinder Lal says the foreigners had come to Gurgaon to get kidneys through the racket.

Five foreign citizens, who had come to India to undergo kidney transplant operation, were on Friday, taken into custody by police in connection with a kidney trade racket unearthed in Gurgaon, officials said.

Five persons, including a doctor, were arrested earlier after Uttar Pradesh and Haryana Police jointly raided two residential premises in Gurgaon on Thursday night and busted a kidney transplant racket.

Joy Mehtab (53), Sonam Joy (52), both US citizens, Leonida Dayasi (56), Leonidaas Dayiasis (63) and Heleni Kitcocy (53) all residents of Greece, were taken into custody from a house in DLF city, Gurgaon Commissioner of Police Mohinder Lal said.

The foreigners came to Gurgaon to get kidneys through the racket, he said.

Police said while Upendra -- an MBBS from Ballabhgarh, a "quack" Jagdish and three of their accomplices were arrested, three other medics -- key suspect Dr Amit Singh, his brother Jeevan and anaesthetist Saroj Kumar are absconding.

Police have released photographs of Singh and alerted all airports in the country to prevent him from fleeing abroad.

As per initial investigation, more than 250 kidneys were transplanted by the doctors during around seven years of their illegal activities, with most of their victims belonging to poor families of western UP, officials said.

Lal said Dr Amit Singh used to pay between Rs 50,000 to one lakh to the person whose kidney was taken out and charge Rs 10 lakh to Rs 18 lakh as fees from the patient who got the organ.
