Five killed, 14 hurt in Sri Lanka attack

The incident took place in areas under rebel control in eastern Batticaloa.

At least five people were killed and 14 wounded in Sri Lanka's northeast on Wednesday in an attack that a pro-rebel website blamed on the military.

TamilNet said the victims were civilians and seven of the wounded were in serious condition. The incident took place in areas under rebel control in eastern Batticaloa.

Military spokesman, Brig Prasad Samarasinghe denied the charge.

Tamil Tiger rebels are fighting to carve out a separate state for Sri Lanka's 3.2 million Tamil minority.

A 2002 truce halted the civil war, but recent violence has raised fear of open hostility returning.
