Five militants killed in Manipur

Five militants of banned People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) have been killed in an encounter with police commandos in interior Thoubal district of Manipur, official sources said on Tuesday.

The commandos attached to Thoubal district police, after receiving a tip-off, had launched massive frisking at Langathel area at around 9 pm on Monday.

During frisking, the commandos spotted a vehicle moving in a suspicious manner and when they asked the vehicle to stop, the occupants fired at the security personnel.

During the exchange of fire that lasted more than 25 minutes, five PREPAK militants were killed, the sources said.

Two others, the driver and his assistant were injured.

The sources said the vehicle had been hijacked at gunpoint from Tentha area, about 10 km from the spot.

Two AK-47 rifles and large number of arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot, the sources said.

Over 365 persons including civilians, militants and security personnel have been killed in militancy-related crimes in Manipur this year.
