Five persons killed, as major rivers swell in UP

Five persons were killed, while several villages in the state remained cut-off from district headquarters as major rivers continue to swell at many places in Uttar Pradesh since last evening, official sources said in Lucknow today.

One person each was killed in Bahraich, Sitapur, Gonda, Lakhimpur and Faizabad in flood related incidents, as Ghagra river continued to play havoc in one dozen districts of the state, they said.

According to daily report of the Central Water Commission Ghagra continued to play havoc in eastern districts and was still flowing above danger mark at Elgin Bridge (Barabanki), Ayodhya and Turtipar in Ballia district.

Though Sharda had started receding, it was still flowing at danger mark at Palliakalan and Sharda Nagar (both in Lakhimpur district), the report said.

The CWC report said that Ganga was rising almost at all the places in the state including Dalmau (Rae Bareli), Phaphamau and Chatnag (Allahabad), Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ballia and Ghazipur.

Similarly, Gomti was swelling at Bhatpurwa (in Sitapur district) and Lucknow, while Rapti was rising at Bansi in Siddharth Nagar district, the report said.
