Footie wives on a shopping spree

india Updated: Jun 20, 2006 17:21 IST

Wives and girl friends (WAGs) of England soccer stars spent a whopping 57,000 pounds (more than 45 lakh rupees) on clothes and shoes in just one shopping spree. They have been keeping away from their partners so as to help the latter concentrate on the ongoing Soccer World Cup.

Six of the women blew 57,000 pounds on clothes and shoes, while in ten minutes alone four of the WAGs parted company with over 3000 pounds (more than 240,000 rupees) on shoes and t-shirts, reported the Daily Mail, and added that the amount was more than most people could hope to earn in a year.

According to the paper, in order to make a few quick bucks taking advantage of the occasion, the clever shopkeepers in the town make sure that they change their window displays every few days to keep the WAGs’ attention.

“The partners of the English footballers come shopping here every day. There are lots of things here for fashionable young women. We sell Prada, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana and Dior. Wayne Rooney's girlfriend has been in here as has Louise Owen, Michael Owen's wife. Gary Neville's fiancee Emma Hadfield has also visited. They all buy a few things,” said Monica Scholz, an owner of the town's most exclusive clothes in Baden Baden.

Declining to reveal exactly how much has been spent in her stylish boutique, Mrs Scholz said: “I hope that England remains for a long time in the tournament.”
