A blue denim brim hat with a white band and leather utility belts with pouches to hold their gadgets. This is the bold new look the Delhi traffic cop will soon be sporting while patrolling city roads.
The new look is part of a revamp process to make city traffic cops look ‘smarter’ and started about two years ago when several pot-bellied personnel were shifted to other departments.
A lot of thought has gone into the new attire. The colour of the hat and the pouches on the utility belts have been carefully chosen to sync with the traffic cops’ existing white shirt and blue trouser uniform, said the police.
Besides giving flair, the brim hat will also protect traffic cops from the sun’s glare while out on city roads. The utility belts will allow traffic personnel to carry an e-challan machine, baton, alcometre, wireless set and even a water bottle.
“These changes are being brought in for the convenience of our on-ground staff. Distribution of the pouches has already started. The hat is being designed and work on it is in the final stages. Possibly, within 15 days, we will distribute the new hats, first to our female staff,” said Taj Hassan, special commissioner of police (traffic).
There are 470 female traffic personnel in the 6,000-strong city traffic police force.
The revamp exercise also saw the remodeling and upgradation of the traffic vehicles, especially the two-wheelers used for chase and challan. The force has 610 bikes of which 24 have been revamped so far. The new bikes are fitted with blinkers in the front and rear with an additional pole-mounted blinker in the back.
It also has a visor to protect the cops, a siren, a helmet fitted with cordless microphone, and comes with an e-challan device.
The traffic police top brass are also in the process of making it mandatory for its field staff to wear reflective jackets at night for their safety.
