Undeclared foreign currency to the tune of about Rs 9 lakh, 33 foreign liquor bottles and 30 cartons of foreign cigarettes have been seized from a ship MT Rising Om, which arrived in Kochi from Singapore.
The office of the Rummaging and Intelligence divisions of Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, in Kochi unearthed the foreign currency and the rest of the articles on June 14, P Ayyam Perumal, Customs Commissioner (Preventive), said in a press release in Kochi.
On enquiry, the crew stated that they were afraid of pirates and thieves and hence did not to declare them in the port.
However, the adjudicating authority imposed a redemption fine and penalty of Rs 50,000.
It is suspected that other ships may be involved in such concealments also.
