For the first time, residents of Delhi are getting a say in what they want from Connaught Place, one of the most popular destinations in the city.

As part of 60 years of Indo-German diplomatic relations, a collaborative celebration titled “Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities” is being held in the city. As part of the celebration, a team of students led by German architect Steffen Becker are doing the rounds of the market, asking people important questions to understand urban spaces better.

The respondents can mark on a wide range of topics, from traffic congestion to whether or not they want drinking water facilities.

An interactive programme has been created on five ipads which have pictures and graphics on which a user can design his/her own Connaught Place. Those interested can log on to to take part in the survey.

But what the team is finding more difficult than the programme itself is getting people to register for the survey. Whenever approached, men reached out for phones while women increased their walking pace. By the end of eight hours, the team of five students managed responses from only 150 people. So far, the biggest concern has been more greenery in the market. Traffic came next.

“It is imperative to listen to the ideas of those for whom these urban spaces are more than just a shopping place,” says Becker. The results of the survey will be presented at an urban fair, which will be an Indo-German collaboration. The findings will then be forwarded to the NDMC and CM Sheila Dikshit.
