Foreigner's rape: police intensify hunt for accused

india Updated: Jun 05, 2013 20:23 IST

Police have launched a massive hunt to nab the culprits who had raped an American woman in the wee hours of Tuesday near Manali.

Senior police officials, including inspector general of police PL thakur and district police chief VK Dhawan, were keeping a tab on the investigations. The police said they had identified the type of vehicle used in the attack and collected forensic evidence.

"She is recovering fast and helping us move forward with the investigation. She has given us details of how the men looked, what they were wearing, which will help us," senior police officer VK Dhawan told AFP by phone.

"She has identified the truck type. It is typically used to transport construction materials so we are checking construction sites to see which trucks were in use at that time," he added.

Police also have forensic evidence and have identified tyre marks from the site where the attack occurred, Dhawan added.

More than 2,000 trucks a day ply the Manali highway which connects the town with remote villages.

The victim is staying at a hotel under police protection in the Manali area. The victim told police she would meet US embassy officials later on Wednesday, Dhawan said.

Meanwhile, the police have impounded a Swaraj Mazda parked at Burwa village.
