The New Year celebrations in Kochi was marred by complaints of sexual harrasment by women foreign tourists. Driven to tears, the tourists made a hurried exit even before the clock chimed 12. Some youth allegedly misbehaved with the teenaged daughter of a tourist, Christon, who had come all the way from Sweden to celebrate the New Year, the police said. When a few resisted the youth for their unruly behaviour, the miscreants beat them up.

“We had a terrible experience when my daughter was grabbed by some men. This is really bad. If you don’t respect people who come here, not many would be interested to see your great country,” said an angry Christon.

Another woman, who was part of a group of foreign tourists, was also allegedly molested, the police said. A big posse of police personnel posted at the venue was of little help as they failed to control the miscreants. “It was a real New Year ‘bash’. Some of us were really running for our life. It is really sad,” a woman tourist shared her bitter experience.

Though the tourists have not lodged complaints, the police have registered a suo motu case, Kochi Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said. Upset with the latest incident, the government has asked the police to keep a strict vigil at tourist destinations.
