A Congress leader was shot at in Khandwa on Saturday evening. Former Congress state secretary Riaz Hussain was shot at when he was going to the market on his bike. When he reached Lalchowki around 2pm, two unidentified bike-borne persons opened fire on him.
He was rushed to district hospital and was later referred to Indore for treatment. His condition is said to be stable now. His supporters gathered on the hospital premises after the incident.
A Muslim delegation met the collector and SP and demanded immediate arrest of the accused.
Khandwa superintendent of police (SP), MS Sikarwar said, "According to the victim, he was on his way to the market when two unidentified persons on a motorcycle shot at him."
"The victim is stable and has been referred to Indore. Extra forces were called to Khandwa to contain any untoward incident. The situation in the city is normal and under control," he added.
"The patient is stable and has been referred to higher centre for neurological treatment," said the doctor who examined the leader in Khandwa. Hussain also fought the state legislature election in 2004.
