A former DMK MLA, A S Mani, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a land grabbing case some two years ago at Avanashipalayam, police in Coimbatore said.

Police said one Venkateshwaran had lodged a complaint saying Mani had negotiated a land deal worth Rs 1.74 crore in 2008 and gave an advance of Rs five lakh. He had also given a cheque for some amount to be presented after six months.

As the cheque bounced, Venkateshwaran approached Mani for money. However, he was reportedly assaulted by Mani's supporters and some of them had erected an hut in the land, the complaint said.

Though a case was filed in 2010 at the Avanashipalayam station, no action was taken in this regard, he claimed. Based on the complaint, Mani was arrested, police said.

Former ministers Veerapandi S Arumugam and NKKP Raja and Chepauk MLA and party's South Chennai district secretary J Abazhagan, besides aides of union minister M K Alagiri, son of former chief minister M Karunanidhi, have already been arrested in connection with land grabbing cases.
