A senior Congress leader Harcharan Singh Brar, who was also a former Haryana Governor, died in his native village Sarai Nage in the district on Sunday following prolonged illness, his family said.
His widow, a son and a daughter survive Brar, 87.
He remained Governor of Haryana from September 24, 1977 to December 9, 1979.
Brar had also taken over as Chief Minister of Punjab on August 31, 1995 after the assassination of the then Chief Minister Beant Singh in a bomb blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh. He remained Chief Minister till November 21, 1996.
He was also credited with the creation of Muktsar and Moga districts out of Faridkot district.
Meanwhile in Chandigarh Governor and Chief Minister of Haryana Jagan Nath Pahadia and Bhupinder Singh Hooda have condoled the death of Brar.
