Former Meghalaya Congress MLA Projen D Sangma was killed and two others seriously injured in a road accident in Kamrup district on Friday, police said.
The mishap occurred in the wee hours when a vehicle in which they were travelling hit a stationary truck at Chaygaon in the district. They were going to Shillong from Labang near Chaygaon, police said.
The former legislator died on the spot while the driver of his vehicle Rupnath Boro and another passenger Ranjan Marak were admitted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Sangma won from the Williamnagor constituency twice in 1988 and 1998 as a Congress candidate and was planning to contest the upcoming Meghalaya assembly elections from Tharkuta constituency as an independent, sources said.
