Former SP booked in Chetna death case

india Updated: Dec 28, 2006 12:06 IST

A SENIOR police official of the State was on Wednesday booked for abetting the suicide of sub-inspector Chetna Sharma in Bhind following a CID probe into her death.

A case of abetment to suicide was registered against Rajababu Singh, former SP of the district, after a probe was conducted into the death of Crime Branch officer Chetna Sharma (29), Inspector General of Police (CID) Reena Mitra, who led the probe, told PTI.

“There was no element suggesting that it was a murder. It was 100 per cent suicide”, Mitra claimed.  “The case was registered by the CID in Bhopal against Rajababu Singh under Section 306”, she said.

Chetna’s body was found at her residence in police lines on November 30, with marks suggesting that the bullet came out from her chest, police said.

Police, who had initially described it as ‘suicide’, later claimed that circumstantial evidences pointed towards possible killing. Singh was transferred from Bhind to Indore as commandant first battalion of Special Armed Forces soon after the incident.

The incident has triggered allegations of foul play by Chetna’s relatives who had accused Singh of harassing her, a charge strongly denied by him.

Demanding a CBI probe into the matter, her relatives also claimed Chetna too had levelled allegations of harassment against Singh before she died.

Talking to the Hindustan Times, Rajababu Singh said that he was innocent and the truth will come out in the open.
