Four children die after measles shots in Assam

Measles vaccination claimed the lives of four infants and left eight others seriously ill at Nimua Public Health Centre in Baska district of the state on Wednesday.

The eight who fell ill have been admitted to Barpeta civil hospital. Doctors attending on them have described their condition as serious.

According to health department sources, the incident occurred in a remote village, Nimua, where a measles camp was organized by the Public Health Centre. Four children took ill after the vaccination and started vomiting. They collapsed after a while and died within half-an-hour. The victims were identified as Bikash Dorji (1 year), Dimbeswar Barkla ( 9 months), Prabin Barman (1 year) and Bhagya Swargiary (9 months).

The State Health Department had launched a statewide measles vaccination campaign. After the Nimua incident, it has ordered an inquiry. The vaccines were supplied by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
