Four persons were killed and 13 others injured when a mini-truck collided with a 10-wheeler lorry in Dubrajpur area of Birbhum district, sparking mob fury that caused the police to fire in the air, the police said.
The accident occurred early in the morning at Tarulia when the mini-truck, carrying goats and people to the weekly cattle-hut at Illambazar, and the lorry collided head on.
While one person died on the spot, three others were declared dead at Suri hospital, the sources said.
A mob blocked the road following the accident.
When policemen reached the spot and asked the people to lift the blockade, there was heated exchange of words followed by a clash that left five policemen injured.
The police then fired two rounds in the air to disperse the mob, the sources said.
Four or five goats also died in the accident.
