At least four Maoist guerrillas were killed and several injured in a gunfight with police in Chhattisgarh on Saturday.
The shootout took place in the Cherpal forest area in Dantewada district, 418 km south of Raipur when troopers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire on a group of heavily armed Maoist rebels.
"The rebels had planned to attack the Cherpal police station but luckily the CRPF were able to repulse the attack. Four bullet-ridden bodies were recovered," said OP Rathor, director general of Chhattisgarh Police.
Many rebels received multiple bullet wounds but they escaped deep inside the forest.
Since January, the death toll in Maoist violence in the state has touched 400, including 321 civilians.
