In a face-off between police and Naxals, four Naxals were killed, while one policeman attained martyrdom in Narayanpur district in Chhattisgarh on Wedneday, police said.

Following the incident, security in the area has been beefed up.

Talking to PTI, Superintendent of Police of Narayanpur district, Mayank Srivastav said, "In Tirkanar forest area falling under the jurisdiction of Dhaudai police station, police shot down four Naxals and also recovered weapons and explosives from them. However, during the operation, Havaldar Brujesh Singh attained martyrdom."

He said that a police squad was sent to Dhaudai police station for an operation. "When the squad reached the forest area, Brujesh Singh suddenly hit by a bullet and fell on the ground. Police shot back and after a while, the Naxals fled from the spot," he said.

"When we carried out a search of the area, dead bodies of four Naxals, including three uniform-clad, were found. Three 12-bore pistols, explosives and some other material was also recovered from the spot," Srivastav added.

The police officer said that rural police have been called in to identify the deceased Naxalites.

Police have also launched a search to catch any more Naxalites hiding in the area, he said.
