Four undertrials flee from jail in Meghalaya

Four undertrials made a daring jail break by assaulting the warden and opening the main gate of the prison after snatching the keys from him in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.

The undertrials - all convicted for crimes like dacoity, extortion and possession of illegal arms, made good their escape from Tura jail on Saturday evening, prompting the authorities to sound alert in the area and launch a combing operation to trace them.

Officials said one of the prisoners entered the main office area of the jail to get some drinking water. He along with his three accomplices then assaulted the warden following which he fell unconscious. They then fled with the keys of the gate.

There have been incidents of jail break in Tura in the past too, when prisoners had scaled walls and assaulted guards to escape.
