Working with local kirana stores to get goods home-delivered, new venture sets up shop online.

In a city that’s always on the move, spare time is not a luxury that many can afford. Now busy professionals can avoid the weekly commute to their neighbourhood supermarket by simply logging on to their Facebook page and purchasing their groceries online. That’s what aaramshop.com is offering Mumbaikars. Tying up with local kirana shops, it works to get groceries home delivered at a time that is convenient to the customer. The project, launched in Delhi earlier this year, will come to Mumbai next month.

“These days, people spend a lot of time on Facebook. So we thought that instead of driving people from Facebook to our website as is conventionally done, we would use that platform to engage with our target audience,” says Vijay Singh, CEO, aaramshop.com. The venture also hopes to help independent local retailers. “Kirana shops are losing out to supermarkets. Their profit margins are down. This way, they too will benefit.”

To order, customers need to log in using their Facebook ID and password. Details, such as exact address need to be filled out. Then, the actual buying begins. There are 32 categories of FMCG goods to choose from, such as haircare (shampoo, oil), bodycare (soaps, bathing lotions) etc, all listed at MRP. The user can then choose a local kirana shop that they would like to make their purchases from. “Customers have the option of mixing and matching from many shops, as well as choosing a delivery time that is convenient to them,” adds Singh. What’s more, the best bargains at local shops are also listed on the page.

Upon selection, a code is sent via an SMS to the buyer. Upon clicking on the code, the order is accepted and the concerned kirana shops are informed. Aaramshop doesn’t charge for the service, and buyers can pay for the goods upon delivery.

Talking about his target audience, Singh says, “It isn’t for teeny-boppers. It is meant to increase convenience among the working class and make their life easier. The concept worked well in Delhi and we’re hopeful of doing well in Mumbai as well”
