AFTER TANTALISING commuters with an abridged version for nearly a month, the City bus service will finally wheel out in full strength on April 14, a day before Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is scheduled to dedicate the service to the public.

According to Indore City Transport Services Limited (ICTSL) officials, the full-fledged service, 37 buses plying on 18-odd routes will become operational latest by the eve of Chouhan’s visit. ICTSL has also cleared the tender bids for setting up passenger information boards at bus stops - a national fist - as well as Global Positioning System (GPS), and the facility is likely to be ready by mid-July.

Under the system, each bus would be tracked by the GPS and its location relayed through radio waves to the passenger information boards, thus giving commuters minute-by-minute updates on the vehicle’s arrival time as well as distance from the stop.

The GPS and information board contract has been awarded to Mumbai-based firm M/s Arya Omni Talk, which bid the lowest amount of Rs 2,400 per bus per month. In other words, keeping commuters informed will cost ICTSL slightly over Rs 10.65 lakh per annum.

“Loan applications for six buses are currently being processed by banks. As soon as this is done we will begin full-fledged services on all 18 routes,” declared City bus in-charge SDM Chandramauli Shukla.

Asked about the reasons for delay in launching the service Shukla attributed it to the piece-meal bidding for routes. “Tenders for the last two routes (six buses) were invited in the second batch and this held up proceedings,” pointed out the SDM.

In all, 37 buses coloured blue, orange and magenta will ply on 18 routes crisscrossing the City from 7 am to 11 pm once the full-fledged service gets underway.  The sleek, ultra-low City buses manned by polite staff have aroused tremendous enthusiasm among City commuters who, until now, were at the mercy of the notorious mini-buses or Nagar Seva.

Although only 12 vehicles are plying at the moment, ICTSL has already issued 500 City bus passes and proceeds from ticket sales have soared to Rs 6,500 per day. City bus service officials say they have received a flood of requests calling for City bus footprint to be extended to include areas not covered under the 18 proposed routes.
