Gambler jumps into Gomti to avoid cops, dies

WATCHING COPS on chase on Wednesday evening, a young gambler jumped into the Gomti and drowned.

A police team had raided the place when the youth along with another youth jumped into the river.

Angry with the death, a mob of local residents later went on the rampage, pelting PAC truck with stones and tried to set a vehicle ablaze. They put the body outside the local police station and staged an agitation demanding action against the policemen involved in the raid. The agitation continued for three hours and ended only after a case against five unidentified policemen was registered into the matter.

The incident took place when a group of youths were engaged in gambling in a hutment on the bank of river in the evening. Suddenly five constables raided the place. Panic gripped the youths seeing the police and four of them jumped into the river to escape the arrest.

While two of them swam out of the river rest of two youths disappeared under the water. Finding two youths drowned, the policemen fled the scene. No sooner the news about drowning of two youths spread in the area hundreds of local residents gathered on the bank of river. Police officials too rushed the place.

Boatmen and divers were pressed into service and they succeeded tracing one body and Asharfilal of Hasanganj identified it as that of his son Sunil Kashyap (28). Seeing the body mob of residents went berserk and they walked towards the local police station carrying the body on a cot.

The angry mob damaged a PAC truck (UHK-0251) pelting stones and tried to set a vehicle ablaze. The mob even tried to ransack police station too but the PAC and police personnel shooed them away using mild force.
