A 17-Year-old student of Mithibai College who attempted suicide on Friday has reportedly told the police that four teenagers had gang-raped her two months ago and were blackmailing her by threatening to distribute lewd photographs in her college.
The Kandivli (East) resident took 10 sleeping pills when Sujit Mohite (18) demanded Rs 2 lakh from her, the police said. The victim was an acquaintance of Mohite’s and lived near his house.
Mohite and his friends, Deepak Pandey (18), Abhijit Gaikwad (18) and Mahesh Patil (18), all school dropouts, were arrested by the Samta Nagar police on Sunday.
Assistant Police Inspector Bapu Bandalkar, investigating officer of the case, said he received a call from Surga Hospital in Kandivli's Thakur Village on Friday that a teenager had consumed sleeping pills.
When the girl, studying in first year junior college, regained consciousness, she told the police that two months ago Mohite called her to a room in the nearby area for some work where the three others were already present. “The girl told us that she was raped by the boys and threatened of dire consequences if she opened her mouth,” said Baldalkar.
All four accused live at Thakur Village.
The girl kept silent about the gang rape; then on Friday Mohite approached her and demanded Rs 2 lakh from her, the police said. “Mohite told the girl that if she failed to give the money he would publicise her lewd photos in her college and the area,” said Bandalkar.
The girl’s father is bed-ridden due to prolonged illness and her mother is a housewife. She has two sisters. The family’s only source of income is the rent they get from a flat. “The girl could not talk to anyone about the incident or pay Mohite, so she decided to end her life,” said Bandalkar.
“After taking down the girl’s statement we arrested the youngsters for rape and threatening the girl for extortion," said Mohite. “However, we would now verify the girl’s claims. Her medical examination is not possible as she was raped two months ago.”
