Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli’s close aide Sunil Ghate (51) and Ghate’s three associates were arrested on Tuesday for issuing threats and extortion.
Ghate is considered to be Gawli’s right hand man. The other three were identified as Bunty Thakur, Sagar Ambekar and Nitin Badade
The police said a few months ago Ambekar had given Rs 6 lakh to a lady named S. Jadhav to purchase a MHADA flat. The middleman for this agreement was Shankar Chavan, the complainant.
But when Ambekar did not get the flat, he approached Ghate to recover his money.
Ghate, Badade, Thakur and Ambekar allegedly threatened Chavan that he would be killed if he did not return the money within 24 hours.
“Based on Chavan’s complaint, we have booked all the four for extortion and issuing threats,” said Inspector S. Mandalik.
All of them were produced in a local court and have been granted judicial custody. They live in the same area in Dagdi Chawl in Chinchpokli.
Ghate was the second-in-command in the Gawli gang and was arrested for involvement in the Jamsandekar murder case last year.
