Gawli nabbed in extortion case

india Updated: Apr 21, 2008 17:52 IST

Gangster turned MLA Arun Gawli was on Monday arrested for his alleged involvement in an extortion case in which his younger brother Vijay Ahir was earlier nabbed.

"After verifying the details of the case, we have established that the extortion was asked on behalf of Gawli on the basis of which we have arrested him," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria told PTI.

Gawli is a sitting MLA from the Byculla constituency and is also the head of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena party. Ahir and two associates were earlier arrested on March 26 for extorting money from a city-based builder since 2005. The group had allegedly extorted money from the builder on an earlier occasion, which had been paid. When they sought money from him again three to four months ago, the builder filed a complaint with the police.
