Police have registered an FIR against senior separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for allegedly making a sessionist speech in Jammu during Eid-ul-Azha.

It was lodged in the city police station under section 124 A (sedition) of Ranbir Penal against the chairman of the Hurriyat hardline faction for the making provocative statements in an attempt to "fan communal sentiments," police said on Wednesday.

The Shiv Sena state unit had filed a separate FIR at Residency police post (also under section 124 A) against Geelani for making the speech at Shahidi Chowk on Monday, its president Anand Sharma said.

Shiv Sena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad staged protest on Tuesday, demanding Geelani's arrest under the National Security Act for allegedly fanning communal sentiments.
