Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest since early on Monday morning, official sources said.
The step was a precautionary measure, they said.
Spokesman of HC, Aiyaz Akbar told UNI that a large number of police personnel have been deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Geelani since early on Monday morning.
He said Geelani was informed by a senior police officer that he has been put under house arrest, to prevent him from moving out.
Akbar condemned the police action.
The HC headed by Geelani had given a general strike call for Monday in protest against the anti-Islam remarks of Pope.
Geelani was also put under house arrest on September 15 to prevent him from going to Sumbal, where he was scheduled to address the Friday congregation and also lead a protest demonstration against the anti people activities of counter insurgents working with the security forces.
