After a hard day’s work in winters all one wishes for is to return to a home that is comfortable and cosy. While many will dig out their old heaters, some head to buy Chinese-made new-age blowers; a fireplace is something that one could set up to lend an old-world charm to your home décor.
Here’s what you need to keep in mind before setting up a fireplace at home. The aim of the fireplace is mostly to create an ambience of cozy comfort — it can be in the living room or in the bed room. Usually, a comfy sitting arrangement is made around the fireplace for people to sit in a warm area. Bubbles Batra, interior designer and promoter of One and Only says, “A typical fireplace is made in a niche in a wall and is made of bricks, stones, cement, etc. The fireplace grate helps to hold the wood off the ground. The fireplace is surrounded by an exterior mantle made of wood, metal, marble, stone, etc.”
If there’s fire, there will be smoke, hence a chimney is a must to let out the smoke coming from the fireplace. Aarti Agarwala from House of Design says, “You need to be careful about things like curtain and upholstery not coming in the way of the fireplace.” Usually grills and screens are used for that purpose.
