The gruesome murder that took place at a fire station officer’s house in Ghaziabad on Monday night has taken a completely new turn on Wednesday.

Police said Hemant Singh (24), who was suspected to be the main accused in the murder case, could have very well become a victim himself.

On Tuesday, quoting Sachin Singh (18), the younger brother of Hemant, the police had said Hemant, a law student, and three of his friends, including a girl, had killed one Lucky, a friend of the elder son. Sachin had said the accused had then dumped Lucky's body in the Ganga canal.

But after prolonged interrogation, the police said on Wednesday Sachin confessed to killing his elder brother, a law student, and dumping his body in Hindon canal.

The murder allegedly took place in the official residence of A.P. Singh, father of Hemant and Sachin, inside the Ghanta Ghar Police Station premises.

Superintendent of Police (City) Rahul Yadvendu said, “During our sustained interrogations till 6 on Wednesday morning, Sachin admitted to killing his brother with an axe purchased 10 days ago from Dasna Gate market.”

“He also claimed to have dumped the body into Hindon with the help of his 14-year-old step brother."

The SP said, “Sachin told us that he made up the first day’s story and the names he gave us were also false.”

Hemant and Sachin were born to fire official A.P. Singh from his first wife. After her death, Singh remarried and had a son, said Rahul Singh, a relative of the Singhs.

The SP added that the police were working on the new angle given by Sachin Singh but couldn't be certain that it is what had actually happened on Monday night.

“We can’t officially conclude that the investigation is over,” the SP said.

During his interrogation, Sachin reportedly told the police that Hemant being the studious one, his father loved him (Hemant).

“My father scolded me quite often. Also, my brother never shared his bike with me and used to beat me up with a belt,” the police, quoting Sachin Singh, told HT.

Sachin told the police that after killing his brother on Monday night, he called up his younger stepbrother around 2 in the night from their Vasundhara house, where his father lives with his second wife and family. He claimed that the two of them took their father’s Maruti 800 car and dumped Hemant’s body in Hindon canal.

Sachin also claimed that he later painted the walls of the house and cleaned up the bathroom with acid to get rid off bloodstains, the police said.

The police have recovered the car allegedly used in the crime from the premises of Ghanta-Ghar police station, the victim’s clothes from Gandhi Nagar area in Ghaziabad and his slippers from a nearby terrace.

Earlier in the day, divers were pressed into service at Hindon canal to recover the body but nothing was recovered.

“We cannot confirm anything till the body is recovered. Both the brothers have been detained for interrogations,” the SP said.

Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Manu Kumari, who lives on the ground floor of the building where Singh was allotted a first-floor house and where the murder allegedly took place, has filed a complaint in the case.
