Police firing in Dasna, Ghaziabad, on Friday night claimed the lives of six people, while a sub-inspector and a head constable suffered serious injuries in the rioting that ensued. The violence was triggered after a copy of the Quran was discovered on the railway tracks with abusive comments and a mobile number scribbled on its pages.
A day later on Saturday, the scene of action — Masuri police station area — continued to be tense, and the district administration deployed Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary to check further violence. Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav ordered a special inquiry and announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each for the family of the deceased.
According to police, at 6.30pm on Friday, some locals reached the Masuri police station and demanded identification of the person to whom the mobile number belonged. By 8.30pm, the angry mob blocked NH-24 and started targeting vehicles and commuters. They also vandalised the station.
