Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal today demanded that Indian Hockey Federation chief KPS Gill take personal responsibility for the national team's failure to qualify for the Beijing Olympics and step down from his post.
"For the debacle of the Indian hockey team, he (Gill) is responsible.
"A person should himself realise (what he has to do). Nobody should stick to a post beyond a time frame, especially when there is no performance from the team," Sukhbir said.
In a bid to revive hockey, he said the ruling SAD would soon launch a Punjab Hockey League by roping in private companies as sponsors.
"I am in touch with the company which was involved in the launch of the Indian Premier League," he said.
For overall development of sports in the state, the government would soon come out with a policy that will focus on creation of infrastructure.
"A complete plan for the promotion of sports will be announced soon. You will see substantial changes in infrastructure after the announcement of the Sports Policy," he added.
A big sports complex would be set up at Talwandi Sabo in Bhatinda district. Besides the state would also announce Annual Sports Awards in different disciplines, he said.
