A 21-year-old girl has approached the Shariat court seeking declaration of her wedding performed 20 years ago as illegal and void.

Nafisa of Kairana town in Muzaffarnagar district said she was married to one Jabbar 20 years ago when she was just one-year-old and the man was two-year-old.

"He is not acceptable to me and I want to marry to my choice. It was my grandfather who performed the 'nikah' and the permission of my father, who was the legal guardian, was not taken. This is against the Shariat law," Nafisa said in her plea to the Shariat court.

Nafisa's father as well as her grandfather are dead now.

The court has taken the statements of Nafisa and fixed July 4 as the date for verdict.
