After appearing for her Geography paper on Monday afternoon, 16-year-old Bhavi Desai jumped to death from the terrace of her seven-storey building in Ghatkopar.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the girl was caught copying during the SSC exam. We will question the principal of the exam centre to verify this,” said Deputy Commissi-oner of Police Rajkumar Vatkar.
Refuting the claim, the family said Bhavi was a “clever girl”. Bhavi’s exam centre was her own school — Pune Vidya Bhavan at Garodia Nagar in Ghatkopar (east).
On Monday, Bhavi left home for her social science exam at 10.30 am. After the exam ended at 1 pm, instead of going to her third-floor residence at Sareena Apartments, Bhavi went to the building terrace and jumped down. She died on the spot. “The security guard was the first to see the body and called us,” said Inspector Arjun Khaire of Pant Nagar police station.
“As her parents were not home, neighbours and the police took her to the nearby Rajawadi hospital,” added Inspector Arjun Khaire of Pant Nagar police station.
The teenager suffered a skull fracture that caused her death, hospital authorities said.
Her father Deepak Desai, who was in a state of shock, refused to speak to the media. “We have lost our child. I will not be able to talk,” said Desai, who owns a company that transports chemicals.
“We will now record the statements of Bhavi’s friends and teachers to find out if she spoke to anyone after the exam,” said Khaire. Bhavi was the youngest of three sisters. Her eldest sister, Mansi, is married and other sibling, Nidhi, is doing a course in fashion designing.
