A 14-year-old schoolgirl in Vaishali district of north Bihar allegedly poisoned her father and younger brother to death in retaliation for their opposition to her love for a neighbour, a teenager a few years her senior and from a different caste.
The minor, a Class 8 student, mixed poison in a vegetable dish prepared for dinner on Friday, apparently to kill her entire family, but her mother escaped death because she was unwell and did not have the food, police said.
The girl’s father, Shiv Mahato, 40, a farmer, and her brother, Class 7 student Akash, 13 (both names changed), died in their sleep at Malpur village. Vaishali superintendent of police Upendra Kumar Sinha said, “The girl, a government school student, is suspected of having connived with her boyfriend to eliminate all her family members.”
Police suspect the girl’s boyfriend helped her procure the poison. The girl reportedly broke down in the presence of locals when her mother, Anita Devi (name changed), told them how tragedy had struck mysteriously after dinner.
Anita Devi had a providential escape, having told her daughter to keep her portion of the deadly dish for the next day.
In her complaint to the police, Anita Devi, accused her daughter, her boyfriend and his mother of being involved in a murder conspiracy.
According to police sources, the girl admitted during questioning to mixing poison in the dish to eliminate obstacles in the way of her love for her boyfriend.
The girl has been sent to a remand home. Her boyfriend and his mother are absconding. Police have sent the leftovers of the deadly dish for forensic analysis to determine the poison used in committing the crime.
