In an unfortunate end to young lives, a teenaged boy is said to have jumped into the blazing funeral pyre of the girl he wanted to marry but could not as her parents wouldn't consent, in Sirsa on Monday.
As per information, Veer Pal Kaur, alias Lali, 16, and Bittu Singh, 17, a native of Malsinghwala village in Punjab who lived at Rori with his maternal uncle, were in love.
Sources said Kaur told her parents that the two wanted to wed.
“When her repeated requests were turned down, she set herself on fire on November 26,” said a villager. She was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed three days later, on Monday.
The body was handed over to the parents, who cremated Kaur. A family member said when they returned to collect the ashes as part of the ritual, they found two skulls at the cremation site.
In shock over the girl's death, Bittu, a class 11 student, jumped into the funeral fire after the family had left, it is believed.
Bittu's mobile was found lying at the scene, over which the girl's family sent for his parents.
Rori police post in-charge Bachaan Singh confirmed the incident.
“We have not received a written complaint yet. Once that is done, we will investigate the matter,” he said.
