A day after a 16-year-old girl committed suicide in Ghaziabad, police registered a case under section 306 (abetment to suicide) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against the man who allegedly raped her in August 2009.
The girl’s family had alleged that Chaman Sharma (23) continued to harass her after allegedly raping her last year.
On Sunday, police registered a case against Chaman Sharma and his father Suresh Chand Sharma (50), residents of Uttranchal Colony of Loni.
The victim’s family raised apprehensions about transparent investigations in the case.
“Even in the rape case of my daughter, the police asked me for money to make a strong case against the accused which I refused to pay,” said Pawan Kumar Verma, the girl’s father.
The case was weakened by police apathy, said Verma, and Sharma managed to get bail. Even the girl’s statements were not recorded, he said.
“I have nothing to lose now and I want justice.” Verma lost his 18-year-old son in an accident in September 2009. Loni Station House Officer Ashok Rana said no arrests had been made so far. “Chaman Sharma is absconding,” he said.
Rana also denied Sharma’s involvement in the case. “The girl was having consensual sex with him and after her family put restrictions on her, she committed suicide,” Rana told HT over the phone on Sunday.
