LUCKNOWITES, STILL in the throes of football fever, were in for more heat as private TV channel Zee Sports, in association with All India Football Federation, launched on Monday a three-week ‘Soccer Carnival’ to popularise and create awareness and excitement around Indian football and Indian stars.
The two-day Soccer Carnival is part of the AIFF-Zee Sports project ‘GOAL 2010’. The project is a vision to ensure that India played in the next Football World Cup in South Africa in 2010. On the first day of the carnival, there was great excitement at Kapoorthala, Bhootnath and Mahanagar where young soccer fans braved the scorching sun to exhibit their fervour for the game.
A number of young enthusiasts, including girls in colourful dresses, enjoyed the ‘mini soccer game’ at the carnival. “It not only gave us an opportunity to know about the game, but there were even gifts for right answers,” gushed Tulika of Indira Nagar.
On Tuesday, the Soccer carnival will travel to Rovers and Gomti Nagar. Similar carnivals are being organised in Chandigarh, Delhi, Kolkata, Goa, Pune, Mumbai, Ahemedabad, Jaipur, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
GOAL 2010 is an assertion of Zee Sports’ commitment to make football the most watch watched and played sport in the country. It believes that this project will help Indian football, make a place for itself in world football.
During the course of live shows at different places in the city, fans were made aware about different facets of Indian football, including various tournaments and leagues, football players, clubs, legends of Indian football, etc.
