Following initiatives taken by a leading Marathi daily, prominent personalities, educationists and nature lovers have come forward to clean the banks of Godavari river, a top civic official said today.
The Nashik Municipal Commissioner (NMC) Mayor Nayana Walzade, NMC Commissioner Bhaskar Sanap and other civic officers visited the river banks on Thursday and supervised the unhygienic situation and polluted water on the river between Ahilyabai Holkar Bridge and Talkuteshwar temple.
"The vegetable market near the bank will be shifted to a new place, drainage water will be stopped and security guards will be appointed," Sanap said.
A local daily had undertaken an initiative to save the river and stop pollution since a month, seeking support of the people in the district.
Godavari banks will be cleaned twice a week. Washing of clothes will be restricted, and NMC will put up pots so that people could throw flowers and other pooja materials in it, he added.
