Two persons — who plotted a fake robbery to pocket gold ornaments worth Rs23.9 lakh from a jeweller — were arrested by Ulhasnagar police.

DCP Sarang Awad, Ulhasnagar, zone-4, said, “Owner of V-To Jeweller, Vikas Chandermal Jain, registered a complaint stating that his employee Kailash Nathuram Pakhad, 25, who was sent to collect gold ornaments from Mohanbhai Sardarmal Jewellers, was robbed and assaulted by four unidentified persons at knife-point.”

Kailash Pakhad was admitted to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar. Despite forming four teams to gather information about the incident, the police couldn’t find any evidence suggesting that a robbery had occurred in the area from Siru Chowk to Nehru Chowk, a crowded marketplace in Ulhasnagar. The doctors too opined that Pakhad’s injuries may have been self-inflicted.

“During interrogation, Pakhad confessed to the crime. He also told the police that his friend Vinod Janu Durgavale, 30, too was involved in the robbery,” added Awad. The police then arrested Vinod and recovered the 1296-gram gold ornaments, worth of which is Rs23.90 lakh.
